OUR TEAM
Rebecca Hompe
President
Rebecca and her family moved to Southwest Washington from Minnesota 5 years ago with their small menagerie of animals including two horses, two German shepherds, two cats and a tortoise named Sheldon.
She began an early career as a vet tech in Minnesota while simultaneously establishing a horse boarding, breeding and training facility, Deer Park Morgan Farm.
Her animal activism experience spans over four decades. She partnered with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and assisted in rehabbing injured wild animals and preparing them for release into their natural habitat. Her family has cared for countless fawns, infant raccoons, squirrels and even a sassy mink nicknamed Spanky.
Rebecca was elected President of the local humane society and oversaw the construction of a brand new facility in her hometown of Minnesota. While partnering with neighboring counties they were able to expand the construction of the new facility and provide resources and support for counties without their own animal shelters.
"I’m proud of the work WAAG has accomplished so far," Rebecca says "and I’m excited to explore other ways we can support our community."
Jenny Martin
Director
Jenny has been rescuing animals after discovering an abandoned kitten in a field when she was 8 in her small hometown of Nikiski, Alaska. She has been fostering, adopting, and rescuing cats and dogs ever since.
Professionally she has spent her life working in various non-profits and always drawn to help where the need is strongest. She has managed a group home for people with disabilities, as well as a domestic violence shelter.
"It has been a lifelong dream" Jenny says, "to help create a non-profit devoted to helping vulnerable animals."
Wendy Edwards
Vice President
Wendy was born and raised in California and grew up surrounded with a variety of pets. Advocating for animals started at the young age of 12 with her first TNR and has been successfully re-homing animals of all types ever since. In 2019, shortly after relocating to the charming town of Cathlamet in southwest Washington, she saw a need for some type of animal advocacy within the community. The vision turned to action and after countless hours of dedication and perseverance WAAG was born!
"My dad would tell me I was like a "Miss Dr. Doolittle," she says. "I started to become more involved with local animal rescues while being a foster parent, animals are very therapeutic."
Anita Orchin
Secretary/Treasurer
After a successful career as a graphic artist in Las Vegas, Anita retired in 2019 to follow her dreams of living in the Pacific Northwest. Having been a "desert rat" all her life, she was ready for new adventures in a new landscape.
There have only been fleeting moments when a dog or cat was not a part of Anita's life. Joining the WAAG team in October 2020 was an opportunity to combine her love of animals and the creativity she missed using her graphic art skills. With the advantage of her informal advertising experience she contributes to WAAG's Facebook page and website, drawing attention to the plight of animals in need.
Anita says, "I can't imagine my life without an animal in it. Each one I've had has been my "favorite" and every one has been my "hardest goodbye." I've always known that my retirement would somehow involve animals, so I'm excited to be a part of a group advocating for animals."
